The Apple I began as a homebrew project designed by Steve Wozniak. Unlike other computers of the time, it was not based on the Altair S-100 bus. It consisted of a single circuit board containing a MOS Technology 6502 microprocessor and about 30 other chips. Wozniak passed the schematics around at the Homebrew Computer Club and helped a few members build their own boards. His friend Steve Jobs suggested assembling a few and selling them. For $666.66 a customer got the single circuit board without case, keyboard, power supply, or monitor. In all, around 200 Apple I’s were sold, and today it is highly valued as a collector’s item.
